Order of Layers in 7 Layer Dip

Here’s the order of these layers in this popular Mexican dip. The sequence is crucial so the particular items contacting each other will meld well together. Starting at the bottom, 1st layer, here are all 7 sections with no enhancements depicted.

  1. Refried Beans
  2. Guacamole
  3. Sour cream
  4. Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  5. Diced tomatoes
  6. Diced green onions
  7. Sliced black olives

Enhancing the 7 Layer Dip Ingredients

Some popular ways to spice up this Mexican multi-layered dip is to also add some things into some of the initial layers. Here are the 3 most popular layers that can enhance the melded flavors in a big way.

Improving the refried beans layer: It’s desired to also mix in some Rotel (or Salsa or Pico de Gallo) and taco seasoning.

For an ultimate taco flavored experience, you can also add in some cooked ground beef flavored with more taco seasonings.

Enhancing the guacamole layer: Sprinkle some cilantro all across the guacamole layer.

Also, some will opt to use a “Spicy” guacamole as the original layer.

Seasoning the sour cream layer: Across the sour cream, sprinkle on some salt and garlic powder.

Adding Ground Beef to Make it a 7 Layer Mexican Taco Dip

If you want to make this more of a Taco flavored dip, just cook up some ground beef with 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning for every pound of meat. You still add the taco seasoning into the seven layer dip recipe also, as the instructions show. However, be aware you’ll probably need a larger casserole dish with this massive added ingredient.

What Casserole Dish Size to Use

You will completely fill a 2 quart casserole dish using all the 7 layer dip ingredients. That’s about 11 inches by 7 inches oblong shaped.

Anything deeper will be too hard to dip into. Also, if you are adding any cooked ground beef, for the ultimate option, you’ll want the next size up as a 13 x 9 inch casserole dish.

What to Serve with this Seven Layer Dip

While tortilla chips is the most popular item to enjoy with this 7 layer bean dip, it’s not the only thing. You can also dip it using flat bread or soft tortillas. More variations are to use regular ruffled potato chips, corn chips like Scoops, and pita chips. Finally, as a spread, it can go on softer things like crackers.

This Mexican multi-layered dip can be served as an appetizer, a snack, or as part of a Mexican style meal. For example, you can serve it alongside burritos, enchiladas, and even soft shelled tacos. Also, it’s great alongside a bowl of spicy black bean soup and a side of authentic Mexican rice. Finally, a truly homemade Mexican meal goes well with a traditional Margarita.

How to Serve 7 Layer Dip

If this involves a buffet style of setting, you can leave it in the casserole dish and guests can use a large serving spoon to scoop out some of this Mexican dip onto their dinner plate. In some scenarios, you can opt to serve them in small bowls or saucers for individual dipping.

The recipe makes enough for about 15-18 individual servings and holds well either on a saucer, plate, or dipping bowl. Also, it serves right alongside other standard appetizers and snack foods. And the large corn chips (“Scoops”) are also great for dipping.

Storing this Layered Mexican Dip

This 7 layered Mexican dip keeps easily refrigerated (covered) for 3 days and maxes out at about a week.

After storing at length, before serving, you might have to drain off excess liquid from this 7 layer bean dip, if any exists. Regarding freezing, it doesn’t fare well since it has several fresh veggies in it.
