How to Make an Authentic Recipe for Italian Sub

Prepare the Italian sub roll

The first ingredient for an Italian sub is its sandwich bread, i.e., the sub roll. You’ll be cutting it along its side, lengthwise. You don’t cut it completely in half but, sometimes I too have issues with that and it ends up cutting through all the way. Regardless, open it up for putting food items on each half of each sandwich you’re making.

With the sub roll fully opened, you now use your fingers and dig into the “meat” of the bread and remove some excess. This is for 2 purposes. It’s to first create a cavity for adding all the upcoming ingredients for the Italian sub. And second, it makes the sub have less bread content. The removal of bread content is not removed from the nutritional values in case you decide to keep it. This type of sandwich doesn’t need to be overwhelmed by so much bread when you’re going to be loading it up with meat, cheese, and veggies.

You then apply any mayo. Spread it across the bread using a tablespoon. You would also add any desired mustard for those who might want it on theirs.

Build the Italian sub in Layers

Add the ham first, then the salami. When making an Italian sub, it’s typical to add most items to both halves. You then add the provolone cheese, followed by the veggies. Also, here’s a fast way to peel an onion. Pour the Italian dressing over both halves of the Italian sub. You now cut it.

Finish the Italian sub

You will now take the cutting knife and use it to contain and compress the ingredients downward. With your other hand, you’ll reach to pull together both halves of the sub roll bread to close it up. You slide out the knife to remove it to finish the sandwich closing action.

Close the sub sandwich together. Then, spin it to cut it in half. At home, you now manually compress the sandwich downward. This will help it hold together better for whoever’s going to be eating it. If you’re taking it with you, like for a picnic or travel, wrap it in a paper towel, then plastic wrap or a plastic bag. The paper towel will help keep the bread fresh and it will also double as absorbing spillage of the Italian dressing and other condiments.
