How To Cook Frozen Chicken Wings In Air Fryer
These are steps on how to cook frozen chicken wings in an air fryer to your perfect level of crispness.
- First, one of the most missed steps, is to preheat your air fryer at 390F for about 2 minutes. It doesn’t really take any longer.
- Then, dump in your frozen chicken wings. I usually do about 2 pounds at a time but can max it out at 4 pounds. For example, I’ll either cook 1/2 bag or a max full bag of frozen wings. Stores usually have about 3, 4, or 5 pounds per bag.
- After about 10 minutes, use tongs to move the wings around in the pot to bring up those from the bottom.
- Then, every 7 minutes, repeat the moving the wings around from the bottom to the top. I use tongs for this because it’s too heavy to toss and the chicken oils might splatter you.
- After about a the second set of moving wings around, they will start to be done. So, as each wing gets crispy on both sides, start to remove them into a large serving bowl. However, if you’re cooking a full 4 pounds of wings, you’ll need 1 or 2 extra 7 minute sessions of cooking and turning wings over.
- After a total of a little over30 minutes of cooking time, they are possibly all done. There are times where I’ve had to go a total of 40-45 minutes but that was only when I used a full bag of frozen wings.

Questions About Air Fryer Frozen Chicken Wings
How did Buffalo Wings get its name?
Like many great tasting, cleverly named dishes, there are several sources who reference the start of Buffalo Chicken Wings. It actually had an extremely long history being just Chicken Wings first. The start of chicken wings allegedly began in China by the chefs of an Emperor.
The 1950s Chicken Wings
Eventually, in the 1950s, Chicken Wings began to spread in a number of locales routinely but slowly. Grocery stores gradually caught on and eventually started selling Wings separately. Also, wings were still very cheap so the lower income families focused on cooking them in all sorts of ways.
The 1990s Buffalo Wings goes nationwide
Then, in 1991-1994, the Buffalo Bills made it to the Super Bowl. And, as media covered this historic segment, they continued to do it four times in a row. During that period, it’s felt that more than 3/4 of the nation’s Chicken Wings (made in many ways) were in Buffalo, NY.
In the 1990s, repeated media coverage occurred during Super Bowl events. Wings became very popular then. So, it’s felt that’s where the name shifted from “Chicken Wings” to be “Buffalo Wings”. Also, the most popular version was to have them dipped in a hot sauce. They soon began appearing using the “Buffalo Chicken Wings” name and eventually just “Buffalo Wings” name in fast food chains nationwide as they introduced it to their menus.
Although chicken wings were “dirt cheap” in the grocery stores, economics eventually prevailed. The heightened demand caused the price of chicken wings to rise. So, by 2022, they cost close to or more per pound than chicken breasts.

Thanks for this post on using the air fryer to make much crispier wings. I had no idea. I always thought it was just put ’em in and shake them halfway through. Your approach is still easy but gives absolute great crispy wings throughout the entire batch!
