What is Hummus?
Hummus is basically a mashed or pureed bean dish. Primarily it’s meant as a dip for types of breads like pita or flatbread. But, it sometimes is the main course as well. It has a long varied history across the Middle East mostly but also has some scantly, shared sources in Western Asia. Hummus Beans
Beans for hummus can be a good variety including chickpeas (aka Garbanzo beans), white beans, lentils, and others. However, the classic, traditional ingredient will be to use Garbanzo beans (or Chickpeas).
Storage of Homemade Hummus
After making this easy hummus recipe, store it in the fridge in a food container with lid. It lasts a week but I’ve kept mine for about 2 weeks before. Some people will set it out on the counter for about 1/2 hour prior to using so, it’ll spread easier.
You can also consider freezing hummus. It will still taste okay although a small amount of its texture and flavor will shift a little. That is, of course, after you’ve thawed it out. I put mine in the fridge for overnight thawing.

Naan bread, flatbread, pita chips, tortilla chips, and corn chips are all popular items you can serve with this bean dip.
Expert Tips
I reviewed some Mediterranean sites and here are some expert ideas to consider. Although I found them to be too tedious, I’m showing some added options to make it even more smooth and creamy.
The skins on the chickpeas will come off. So, you can squeeze or hand peel them off if desired.
Another tip for a more creamy texture is to heat up (drained) canned chickpeas in boiling water for about 15 minutes before putting them into the blender.
The garnish can be several different things like chopped bits of broiled red pepper, paprika, or even a few of the cooked chickpeas.
