How To Make And Cook Cabbage Soup Overview

This complete easy-to-follow recipe will guide you how to make and cook cabbage soup the fastest possible way. I summarize here the steps.

  1. Pull out pot and ingredients.
  2. Dice onions and add it along with initial ingredients to cook for 5 minutes.
  3. Chop carrots and cut up a cabbage. Add all remaining ingredients to cook covered for 1 hour.
  4. Ready to serve.

Cabbage Soup Ingredients

The cabbage soup ingredients used in this recipe are simple and common. You just need a cabbage head, carrots, onions, chicken broth, minced garlic, and black pepper.

How To Make Cabbage Soup

When you make cabbage soup, most recipes call for the entire head of cabbage and an enormous pot. Also, most will end up with an oversized amount of servings that you’ll end up throwing out because it’s too much left over. So, this recipe uses just ½ head of cabbage and is far more practical. You just use a regular medium-sized pot and it still makes a good amount of 8 servings.

You’ll just peel the onions, dice them, and cook in some oil for a few minutes. Then, you add in the rest of the ingredients, cover the pot, and come back in an hour. Overall, it’s very simple and very fast. Most important, the recipe is in an order to make it the quickest and most efficient.

Storing Cabbage Soup

When storing cooked cabbage soup, just keep it in the fridge or freezer. It can last 7 days in the fridge. Also, you can freeze it for lasting up to 6 months. However, if you added in any optional meat, it keeps frozen for up to 3 months or in the fridge for 3-4 days.

Expert Tips To Cook Cabbage Soup

Here are some expert tips to improve when you cook cabbage soup.

  • Although the recipe calls for a specific type of onions, use the type that you typically prefer. For example, I prefer sweet onions but a lot of people also pref yellow onions. So, change it to the kind you mostly like.
  • Also, for an extra kick, add in ¼ teaspoon of cayenne red pepper.
  • In addition, if you want some meat, add in cubed or cutup chicken, roasted turkey, ham or leftover ham. Others have added in ground beef or leftover cooked hamburger, but the most commonly preferred are those initially listed.
  • If it’s too plain tasting for you, just replace the water with more chicken broth. Another option is to add some salt to taste.
  • And if you prefer to cook cabbage soup in an Instant Pot or other Pressure Cooker, just use the soup settings and it will be fine.
  • Finally, if you like to cook cabbage soup in a slow cooker all day, just toss in all the ingredients and set it to “Low”. It’s handy to have it ready when you get home from work.

Cabbage Soup Health Benefits

Cabbage soup health benefits are great. Firstly, cabbage soup calories are a little over 50 calories per serving. Also, cabbage is excellent for reducing stomach ulcers, is full of vitamin K, and lowers the “bad cholesterol”. So, that health info is taken from an excellent article “Considering the Cabbage Soup Diet? Here’s Why To Steer Clear” by Leandra Beabout. The article was medically reviewed by Grant Tinsley, PhD, CSCS, *D, CISSN.

The article has health benefits of cabbage soup but alos illustrates the pros and cons of following a cabbage soup diet. Personally, I use it as a side for meals or as a lighter lunch replacement.

Never made cabbage soup before. I was always just so-so on cooked cabbage but I thought I’d try this soup recipe for a weight loss thing that was suggested using cabbage soup. It was a lot better than I thought. Pretty good flavor.
