What makes a Great Chicken Pizza Recipe?
Chicken Pizza Ingredients
What are the ingredients for a darn good homemade chicken pizza? Well, this is very important because chicken on a pizza is very special. So, you’ll start with skinless, boneless chicken breasts that are fully cooked. You can use leftover chicken or just boil chicken breasts in water until done. Then, you dice them up into cubes or you can shred them.
Chicken Breast Alternatives
While chicken breasts are the preferred meat for chicken pizza, you can mix it up. This is often done when you have leftover chicken. There have been times when I had leftover wings, which also is a white meat, like chicken breasts. And other times, I’ve mixed white & dark meat with leftover chicken.
Use skinless, boneless chicken breasts as primary for chicken pizza. Otherwise, a mix is fine.
Choose the Pizza Sauce
You’ll want the usual tomato-based sauce that will be the first thing to put onto the pizza dough. However, guess what, it doesn’t have to specifically be a pizza sauce. So, with that said, here are the most popular choices that all work great with this homemade pizza recipe.
- pizza sauce
- tomato sauce
- spaghetti sauce like Ragu
- marinara sauce like Bertolli, RAO’s marinara, or Classico
Plus, see RAO’s white chicken pizza recipe as another pizza recipe option. RAO is one of the good marinaras you can use as a great pizza sauce.
Choose and apply any recommended tomato-based sauce to pizza dough crust base.
Choose Your Pizza Dough Crust
You’ll start chicken pizza by choosing one of the following pizza doughs:
- store bought pizza dough
- 1 pound dough in a bag (not in many stores)
- Pillsbury roll out pizza dough crust
- prebaked pizza crust (like Boboli)
- made by hand pizza dough (popular preference)
- pizza dough made by bread machine (popular preference)
- Other options are to use a base of open-faced sub rolls, French bread, Italian bread, panini, ciabatta , pita bread, or even tortillas.
Decide on The Best Toppings for Homemade Chicken Pizza
So, the best toppings to use will keep the pizza flavor but also won’t overwhelm the chicken flavor. So, besides the chicken, in this chicken on a pizza recipe, we use onions, cheese, and spices. But, you can dress it up with some optional pineapple pieces to give it a Hawaiian taste. However, if you use pineapple, keep it much lower than the meat amount because fruit can easily drown out the chicken flavor. Finally, keep your toppings low for your first chicken on a pizza. Experiment further after you’ve made this one. So, our chicken pizza toppings will be:
- diced onions (sweet, purple, or yellow)
- shredded mozzarella cheese
- grated parmesan cheese (easiest is from the Kraft plastic jar you sprinkle with)
- Italian seasoning (or just Oregano)
Putting toppings on
Do you cook the chicken before baking it on a pizza?
Yes, you cook the chicken before baking it on a pizza. All meat on a pizza is commonly cooked before adding it to a pizza. But, the cooked chicken doesn’t have to be hot. In other words, it can be cold from the fridge but not frozen from a freezer. It can also just be cutup leftover chicken from the fridge.

Layering the Homemade Chicken Pizza
The order you use to create your chicken pizza recipe is crucial. On the pizza dough crust, you first spread out the tomato-based sauce (used as a pizza sauce). Then, you sprinkle the mozzarella cheese. Then, the veggies, optional fruit, and chicken go on. You finish it off with the spices and parmesan cheese.
